In 2010 The Connecticut Rivers Council was selected to participate in a pilot of the Required Training initiative.  This initiative is designed to ensure that all direct contact volunteers will complete a standard, minimum set of training courses by January 1st, 2011.

Beginning January 1, 2010, all top leaders will be required to complete training. Top leaders are Troop Scoutmasters, Pack Cubmasters, Crew Advisers, Ship Skippers, and Team Coaches.

Beginning January 1, 2011, all direct-contact leaders will be required to complete training. A direct-contact leader is any registered leader who comes into ‘direct contact’ with youth members during the regular course of their volunteer duty. This includes assistants to the top leaders and all den leaders.

Training for non-direct contact leaders is not included in the Required Training Initiative but is still a vital component to the delivery of the Scouting Program.

A seperate section has been created which lists the recommended training classes needed for non-direct contact leaders to be considered "Trained".

Non-Direct Contact leaders include committee members and chairs, Commissioners, ScoutParent unit coordinators, Chartered Organization Reps.  Although in direct contact with your, Merit Badge Counselors are also included in this category.
