Leadership and the Troop Webmaster

How does one lead without someone under them to lead?  That is a question that many Scout Leaders have asked about many of the approved leadership positions in Scouting from Historian to the new Troop Webmaster position.  But, like a Patrol leader, there are many opportunities to learn leadership and life skills in these positions.

A webmaster must be task oriented but also establish themselves as an authority, the responsible individual and must be one who can influence others that they do not have a direct authority over.  They must be the authority on how the website operates, responsible for ensuring that the website is accurate, up to date and the latest materials are on the website and they must be able to influence those they do not have direct control over to constantly keep in contact with the website and to provide the appropriate materials needed to keep the website current.  A successful Troop Webmaster is one of the most knowledgeable members of the troop who can identify a gap in the website on their own and then take the initiative to gather information and post it.

Task oriented, authoritative, takes personal responsibility, influences others, knowledgeable and takes Initiative.  Sounds like a leader to me.  And, it sounds like the Troop Webmaster job, when done well, will help a Scout become prepared for life.

The Connecticut Rivers Council provides each unit with a unit website.  There are several ways that the troop’s website can be used to help the Troop Webmaster develop leadership skills (and help the Troop keep informed).

The unit Webmaster Role (from the BSA Job description–  The troop webmaster is responsible for maintaining the troop’s website. He should make sure that information posted on the website is correct and up to date and that members’ and leaders’ privacy is protected. A member of the troop committee may assist him with his work.
