2012 Connecticut Rivers Council Climbing Instructors Course

The 2012 Climbing Instructors Course will be held on May 4 - 6, 2012 at Camp J. N. Webster in Ashford, CT. The course goal is to ensure that you can safely and effectively manage a climbing program for your camp, district or unit.  It will help you to solidify your knowledge of climbing and to bring it into line with the current policies of the BSA. This course is intended for any adult who meets the prerequisites and is interested in teaching the basics of climbing and rappelling.

The course will begin on Friday, May 4th at 6:00pm at the Chips cabin. Hands-on learning at a natural climbing site (Wolf Rock) takes place all day Saturday. Saturday evening will be classroom and Sunday morning will be spent at the Climbing tower. The course concludes at 2:30 pm on Sunday.

The fee of $85 covers the cost of the course as well as meals, beginning with a cracker barrel on Friday night up to and including lunch on Sunday. We will not be serving dinner on Friday night, so make sure you eat before you arrive. We will be sleeping on beds and mattresses in a cabin at Webster. You may bring a tent in which to sleep if you prefer. You may bring your own harness, helmet and climbing shoes but they are not required. We will supply all climbing equipment that you will need.

You should have a basic understanding of the concepts of climbing such as belaying, knots and equipment in order to enroll in this course.

Upon successful completion of this course, you may receive a certificate as a “BSA Climbing Instructor”. This is a 2 1/2-year certificate. You are then able to act as a “Qualified Instructor” at a unit, district or council climbing/rappelling activity.

Please bring the following items with you to the course:

  • A completed  BSA Annual Health and Medical Record
  • A copy of your current Climb On Safely card (Take the course on the My Scouting site if you do not have a current card.)
